Danaus plexippus x Saturnia pavonia

These three wonderful creatures are hybrids of their parents: Danaus plexippus and Saturnia pavonia. Two of the offspring contain physical characteristics of both parents, while one of them has the body of Danaus plexippus but with another set of wings. These three are created individually and placed together as one unified composition.

This is a mixed media project where the technique of solvent image transfer is used to transfer ink from printer (20 lb) paper to 154 lb paper. This increase in paper thickness allows for visually and tactually distinct layers.

The unique characteristics of each parent are cut out and isolated, assorted, and then collaged to form these three creatures.

Their scientific names are Emprys unus (top), Saturnus paxonia (bottom left), and Daxis sulpii (bottom right).

Each species has its own unique look and own unique feel. The layers add an interesting tactile experience, while the assortment of anatomical structures of both parents adds an amazing visual experience.

Each species rests on an 8 in x 6 in canvas panel. All three are to be bought together as a collection.
