Proudly South African - This painting was inspired by my late aunt's rose bushes. A loose, impressionistic oil of roses, painted with warm, buttery strokes that let the flowers hover between shape and suggestion. Peach and coral blooms sit in a clustered cascade, the largest rose just off-center like a quiet conversation partner, while smaller buds and leaves reach up and out in quick, green slashes. The brushwork is tactile and circular—petals built from layers of pink-orange swirls—so you almost feel the velvet of the flowers under your fingers. A soft, cool background of pale blue-gray gives the composition air and distance, as the morning light filters through a thin veil of foliage and blooms. The mood is gentle and domestic, equal parts fresh-cut optimism and the faint, tender ache of something already remembered.. This painting was done in short bursts between errands and translated to the painting which tends to suggest capturing the sun's reflective warmth before it fades. Small details—a few half-closed buds, a leaf brushed with a gray shadow—suggest a life cycle in motion, quiet and present rather than staged. That exactly describes my aunt Mabel's presence growing up :) It is painted on canvas paper and varnished. COA included.
