Mother Baby Hippos wall sculpture hand carved
A lot of people collect Hippo art; more than one would think.
Richard Vest, California Wildlife artist, loves this heavy mammal and remembers his times at the San Francisco Zoo feeding the hippo as a little boy. The artist grew up in San Francisco: his dad operating several salmon fishing boats out of Fisherman's Wharf for over 30 years.
An unusual creature, the Hippo lives in Sub-Saharan Africa and is the 2nd heaviest land mammal on earth. They spend up to 16 hours a day in the water partially submerged and can hold their breath for up to 5 minutes at a time.
The rest of the time they keep the body submerged to keep it cool from the hot Saharan sun.
Richard hand carves this selection in alder wood showing the Mother and Baby Hippos together. Also on his Etsy page, the artist offers the baby hippo by himself as a separate piece.
This piece measures approximately 24" high by 48" across making a wonderful display over a fireplace, couch, or den wall. Richard carves the folds of skin in this animal making it a very realistic piece generating comments and compliments from visiting friends wherever it is displayed.
The piece, for indoor display only, has steel hooks on the reverse, ready for wall hanging.
Each of the artist's carvings are individual original works with their own grain, coloring, texture, and personality. The piece is finished with hand rubbed Tung Oil.
The artist signs each piece. Additionally he includes a signed Authenticity Certificate with the work.
