The Puppeteer
The Puppeteer is a visual translation of the chapter “The Covert Narcissist” from Operating Without a Manual.
This piece represents what manipulation feels like from the inside.
The suspended figure reflects the moment I realized I was being controlled emotionally and psychologically — not through force, but through affection, silence, and distortion of reality. The glowing heart symbolizes how vulnerability becomes leverage. The strings represent gaslighting, love-bombing, and triangulation — invisible forces that pull at a person’s identity until they no longer recognize themselves.
The surrounding objects mirror the internal damage:
the pill for chemical dependence on validation,
the scissors for severed truth,
the knife for emotional harm,
and the broken heart for what remains after discard.
This artwork was born from personal experience documented in my book Operating Without a Manual, specifically the chapter “The Covert Narcissist,” where I recount how psychological manipulation destabilized my sense of reality and cost me irreplaceable time with my family.
The image is not about blame.
It is about awakening.
About seeing the strings.
About reclaiming agency.
This piece exists as both testimony and warning:
what looks gentle can still control,
and what feels safe can still erase you.
