The Mark of Zorro
Whatever you know him as, and wherever you know him from—blockbuster movies, television, video games, cartoons, or millions of comic books—Zorro remains one of popular culture’s most enduring heroes.
Created in 1919 by novelist Johnston McCulley, Zorro first appeared in The Curse of Capistrano, introducing readers to a mysterious masked swordsman who fought injustice with style and skill. His popularity quickly leapt beyond the page. In The Mark of Zorro (1920), starring Douglas Fairbanks, and later in the acclaimed remake starring Tyrone Power, Zorro proved he was destined for the screen as much as the novel.
Behind the mask is Don Diego de la Vega, a wealthy Californio nobleman who hides his true nature behind the façade of a carefree and cowardly aristocrat. By day, he appears harmless and indifferent. By night, he becomes Zorro—the fearless defender of the oppressed, striking back against corrupt rulers and those who abuse their power.
