Hail Britannia

Hail Britannia

One thing that Holmes has in common with generations of pipe smokers is that he often combined a contemplative mood with bowl after bowl of tobacco. When faced with a particularly difficult case, Holmes informed Watson that he didn’t wish to be disturbed for the rest of the evening, as he intended to smoke and ruminate over the puzzle at hand. In doing so, he told Watson that he considered the case to be “quite a three-pipe problem.” Sherlock Holmes is mentioned smoking a clay pipe sometimes, it's referred to as a 'black' clay pipe. Doyle has Holmes smoking the clay most often; six stories have him puffing away, when in a pensive mood. While there were, pipes made of black clay, it is likely his pipe was originally white clay, and became blackened with heavy use. Arthur Conan Doyle's writings mentions Holmes smoking three kinds of pipes: a black or dirty, oily clay pipe; an old briar; and a long Cherrywood.
