Come little children, gather around and listen. Listen to an ancient story passed down through many ages. This story my children, holds a valuable lesson for you, one that will keep you safe when you wander about. This story is the story about the elusive forest witch, Baba Yaga, once the most kind, beautiful and loved child in her village. But alas, while this child had not yet lived one year, a deadly illness fell upon her. An illness that was sure to see her gone within the month.
Her father, distraught at the thought of seeing his beloved child perish, went out to seek the help of an enchantress to heal her. The old powerful enchantress did in fact heal her but not without cost. Soon, it became very apparent to the father the terrible thing he had done.
As the child grew, she became powerful, and the villagers became frightened of her. The children of the village began to disappear, and her father feared for her life once again if the villagers ever found her out. Not bearing to have harm come to his child, the father hid her away deep in the woods. Alone.
Baba Yaga as a child knew ways to survive. She knew how to entice children away from the village to play with her. Tempting them with sweets, many, many delectable sweets. Enticing these children and encouraging them to quench their hunger for those sweets and asking nothing in return. Once these children ventured into the forest for her sweets she would trick them. Calling to them in their mother’s and father’s voice, luring them deeper into her woods, never to be seen again. Sadly, tricked by these ghostly voices they become Baba Yaga’s next meal.
So dear children, listen. Please beware of those offering gifts and wanting nothing in return. For you may become Baba Yaga’s next meal.
