Frederick Sandys was one of the pre-raphaelite artists who studied with Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Perdita is a character from William Shakespeare's play, 'The Winter's Tale.' She is an abandoned child who, it is eventually discovered, is really the Princess of Sicily. 'Perdita' means 'the lost one,' in italian.
