Saladin

I’m drawn first to the contrast: a soft, almost whispery white horse set against a rich, warm red panel patterned like damask. The painting feels intimate — the canvas texture shows through the lighter strokes of the mane and neck, and the artist has used delicate, feathery brushwork to describe each strand of hair so the mane reads as both fluffy and deliberately groomed. The horse’s dark muzzle and the carefully rendered bridle, with its small bead-like highlights, anchor the composition with a tougher, more tactile quality.

There’s a calm intelligence in the eye, caught with a tiny reflected light that keeps the gaze believable rather than flat. The background’s repeating flourishes and a narrow gold-tinged border give the image a decorative, almost textile-like frame that contrasts with the animal’s quiet presence. Overall it feels like a close, respectful portrait — relaxed, detailed where it needs to be, and gentle in its handling of light and texture.
