Long Rainbow Resting on Waves

Long Rainbow Resting on Waves

Near Pearl Spring stands a thousand-year-old reclining cypress with a peculiar shape. The “Ode to the Epang Palace” states: “A long bridge rests on waves, yet what dragon is unseen? A lofty path traverses the sky, but what rainbow appears without clearing skies?”While long rainbows (or bridges) resting on waves are common, a “cypress resting on waves” for over a millennium is a truly rare sight. The section of its main trunk close to the ground bears a striking resemblance to a reclining dragon lifting its head. On a serene autumn afternoon, the surrounding greenery makes it look like an azure dragon, creating a breathtakingly beautiful scene.During the creative process, I aimed to maximize the emphasis on the flowing, dynamic lines of this thousand-year-old cypress. While preserving the strong contrast characteristic of acrylic mediums, I incorporated the blank-leaving technique of Chinese aesthetics—using gold leaf as decorative embellishment. I believe the essence of Chinese aesthetics lies in the interplay between intricacy and emptiness.Imagine it as a steadfast figure, standing firm against the monumental changes of millennia with an unwavering posture.I also hope to inspire the world to reconsider Eastern aesthetics.
