A-Two Ladies Playing under the Tree
I keep being drawn to how simply the artist has split the scene with that pale, almost white tree trunk — two people sharing the same little canopy but turned slightly away from each other. The left figure, in a loose white blouse with red trim and a deep blue skirt, tilts their head inward and breathes into a long flute; their posture feels private, focused. Opposite them, a taller figure in a slim red dress embroidered with delicate flowers stands more upright, one hand resting on the trunk and the other holding a small circular fan painted with a tiny scene. The background is a warm, textured yellow, lightly scored with ghostly vine sketches that give the whole piece a hint of unfinished thought. The leaves overhead are painted in thick, curling strokes of green, playful and almost tactile against the smoothness of the figures’ faces. Skin tones are a soft, rose-tinged pink, faces elongated and simplified so emotion reads in their angle and gaze rather than in detail. There’s a quietness here — the closeness of two people, a shared space beneath the tree, but also a gentle distance in their poses. It feels intimate without being sentimental, like catching a fragment of a longer, private moment. The brushwork gives it a handmade warmth; you can almost feel the canvas grain under the yellow wash.
